PD Group Cycling

The YMCA of Metro Atlanta has teamed up with PD Gladiators to offer a package of PD-specific exercise classes and support that will help people with Parkinson’s design a personal exercise program that is effective, fun and sustainable. Almost all YMCA branches are now offering Parkinson's Movement Classes free to all YMCA members.

Parkinson's Movement Classes

Parkinson’s Movement classes are designed for individuals at all stages of PD wanting to work on cardiovascular fitness, balance, strength and flexibility. Movements can be done in a chair as well as standing and at an intensity level that is self-selected by each participant. All of the instructors have been trained by experts to make these classes safe, effective and fun!

CLICK HERE to view a video news story by Kayla Robins of the Forsyth News about the Parkinson's Movement Class in Cumming. While each instructor adds their own style to the Parkinson's Movement Classes at other YMCA branches, the video will give you a good idea what these classes are like and how they help people with Parkinson's and their care partners. CLICK HERE to read an April 2017 story in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about the program. PD Gladiators can join at a reduced monthly rate (see below). You can also obtain a free day pass at any YMCA branch--use it to try one of their new Parkinson's Movement Classes!

Participants who participate in this program will be paired with a YMCA personal wellness coach who will help them work through their exercise-related challenges. Teaching you how to start and stick with exercise will:

  • Reduce fatigue and sleep irregularities
  • Increase energy levels
  • Improve moods
  • Slow disease progression
  • Enhance overall feelings of well-being

THE COACH APPROACH® is available at all YMCA of Metro Atlanta branches, and their wellness coaches can help you develop — and stick to — an appropriate exercise routine even at locations not yet participating in the PD Gladiators at the Y program.
