I am 66 and have been running trails in Northern California for 50 years. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2013, but had been aware of symptoms years before my diagnosis. I believe my three to five days a week of trail running has delayed the progression of the disease.
In 2016, I ran in 15 races, from 5K’s to several mountain trail half-marathons. I’ve only fallen once, on the dreaded Dipsea Trail. I believe that running on all kinds of trails, rocks, dirt, roots and mud forces my mind to develop new pathways to cope with balance and cognition and keeps my Parkinson’s symptoms at bay, with the added benefits of relieving stress and brightening my day.
If you are able to hike, run or walk trails, it will energize and inspire you in your fight to slow the progress of your disease. Use hiking poles if necessary, but keep at it. See you on the trails!
