Lynn B. Schramek
Lynn B. Schramek from Pittsford, NY
Nominated by Dennis Whitney
Lynn B. Schramek created the Parkinson Café in 2009 to provide social, cultural and intellectual interaction for people with Parkinson's disease and their families.
Her husband Brad was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2005 when he was in his forties. No longer working, he missed the daily interaction he enjoyed in the business world. With Brad’s help, Lynn created the Parkinson Café. Each café runs from 10 AM to 2 PM and the activities include informal networking, lunch and varying informational sessions featuring local professionals ranging from musical interludes to supportive coping circles. Over the last three years, she has, at the request of participants increased the number of cafes in locations across the Greater Rochester, NY area to improve accessibility for attendees. This truly unique concept not only provides a stimulating, ongoing opportunity for the Parkinson community but has introduced participants to the various other support activities and resources available in the area.
As Lynn and Brad prepare to spend their winters in the south Lynn has worked with other volunteers, a local retirement facility, and a local home care agency to carry on the cafes as she recognizes the great need this program fills in the community.
As an organization. we have been delighted at the positive feedback from the participants in the Café’s. You may access information at: www.parkinsoncafe.org or go to the Parkinson Café on Facebook.
While she was creating the café, Lynn continued as VP for publicity and communication for our local NPF Chapter, National Parkinson Foundation Greater Rochester. Both Lynn and Brad are to be commended for their energy. foresight and dedication.
